Static Mattress FAQs

Very! At MacMed we are committed to matching the right mattress product to the client’s individual needs. Beware of the “one size fits all” claims of some mattress manufacturers. How can a frail elderly person achieve appropriate pressure relief on a mattress that is weight rated for a patient of 240 kilograms? Lighter weights require different configurations of foams. The clinically obese patient requires a “bariatric” solution to their pressure care needs.
Absolutely yes! The three golden rules of relieving pressure are MOVE, MOVE, MOVE! The best thing you can do to relieve pressure is to change position frequently. In addition, in high risk cases special additional equipment should be used such as cushions, heel wedges and even specialty linen and garments such as MacMed’s Parafricta range with zero shear and friction properties.
The MacMed Mattress has high frequency welded seams to prevent the ingress of fluids as well as a unique waterfall flap over the zipper. The cover is impermeable to fluids. The interior mattress foams are also treated with an internationally renowned antimicrobial to prevent bacteria, mould, mildew and dust mites.
Certainly, in addition to the range of ‘standard’ sizes (as seen below), MacMed are able to custom manufacture any of the products to any size and configuration:

Single Size: 188cm x 91cm
King  Single: 203cm x 107cm
Long Single: 203cm x 91cm
Double: 188cm x 137cm
Queen: 203cm x 153cm
King: 203cm x 183cm

Yes, every MacMed mattress is covered in an innovative fabric that is completely impermeable to fluids but is breathable for additional patient comfort and optimum skin integrity.
MacMed mattress covers are made from a unique fabric called “MacTech” which has been meticulously designed to cope with the rigors of the healthcare environment while providing  a soft two way stretch for low shear and friction.
MacMed only use the finest quality hospital grade foams suitable for all healthcare environments.
No. ALL MacMed products are certified latex free so they are not harmful to those clients who suffer from latex allergies, this is usually a mandatory requirement of hospitals and health networks
The easiest way is to “profile” the patient in bed and observe the three layers of foam by uncovering a section of the mattress cover. The traditional “fist test” is subjective and unreliable and was not conceived with the multi layer mattress in mind.  Mistakes often occur when the harder support layers of the base are compressed and by mistake it is considered “bottomed out” MacMed mattresses are scientifically configured to keep the patient in the upper layers at all times.
Yes.  In fact, MacMed have some wonderful testimonials from spinal injury clients who have found comfort and the right support from one of our customized solutions such as the MACRO – the MacMed Mattress with the ROHO insert.

MacMed also supply many mental health facilities with occupational health and safety compliant equipment solutions.

Repose FAQs

Pressure ulcers result from a combination of factors including pressure, shear, friction and maceration.  In common with all pressure redistribution mattresses, carers should follow standard protocols for turning the patient while on a Repose Mattress Overlay.
Repose has not been tested for use with electric blankets.  MacMed Healthcare do not endorse or provide guidance on the use of Repose in association with electric blankets.
Repose is a TGA marked medical device.  At the end of its useful life, the product should be treated as healthcare waste and disposed of according to local healthcare waste guidelines.  It may be incinerated with other healthcare waste.
Repose is a low profile mattress overlay which contains no exposed metal or electrical elements and can be used safely during CPR.
It is not necessary, however most patients find it comfortable and carers find it convenient to use a cotton sheet.  If a sheet is used, it should be loosely fitted to ensure that “hammocking” does not occur.
No.  The ‘smart valve’ technology is designed to set pressures before the patient is in place.  It takes less than one minute to inflate Repose prior to use.
Repose has been tested to conform with BS:7175 Crib Test 5. (Methods of test for the ignitability of bedcovers and pillows by smoldering and flaming ignition sources)
Puncture is an infrequent occurrence and is usually caused by pets.   We have no evidence to support the use of Repose after repair and we therefore recommend that if the product is punctured, it should be replaced.
Cleaning recommendations for repose are similar to those for standard PU covered foam mattresses.  Clean with soap and water and, if necessary, with a chlorine-based disinfectant (not phenol-based).  The product should be dry before repacking into the tube.  Cleaning instructions are supplied with the product.  Repose is reusable.
No.  The ‘smart valve’ technology in the pump automatically ensures Repose inflates to the optimal pressure.  This pressure has been demonstrated over time to be the optimal balance between comfort and efficacy for pressure ulcer prevention and treatment.
Repose can be used for patients up to 139kg.  There is no lower patient weight limit.  Patients at the higher extremes of the weight range should be monitored regularly.
